The School of Shipping is a secondary College of Zhejiang institute of communications. It was established in April 2004 by the merger of the former Department of Marine Technology and the Department of Marine Engineering. There are 7 majors such as navigation technology, turbine engineering technology, shipbuilding engineering technology, shipbuilding manufacturing and maintenance, intelligent control technique, international shipping business management, international cruise ship service, and tourism management. Among them, the navigation technology major is the teaching reform pilot major of the Ministry of Education, the key project construction major of the National backbone higher vocational colleges, the key specialty of the demonstration higher vocational colleges in Zhejiang Province, and the superior specialty of Zhejiang Province; The major of turbine engineering technology is the key specialty of Zhejiang Higher Vocational College and the key specialty of national key vocational colleges. Ship engineering technology and international shipping business management is a specialty of construction in Zhejiang higher vocational colleges. For more than 50 years, the college has trained more than 8,000 professionals for domestic and foreign shipping enterprises and institutions. According to statistics, more than 70 % of the managers, captains, and chief executives of major shipping companies in Zhejiang Province alone are due to this source. At present, there are more than 1,600 full-time students.
The college has 30 maritime simulation training centers such as the international advanced large-scale ship manipulation simulation training center, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System(GMDSS) simulation training center, the large-scale turbine simulator, and the engine room of the turbine automation, as well as another standard swimming pool and 7M diving pool. One, The total area of real training is 6,000 square meters, and the total value of real training equipment assets is 25 million yuan. Among them, the navigation technology professional training base won the navigation construction project of the Ministry of Communications in 2006 and is the only construction unit of the higher vocational navigation colleges in China; Marine engineering technology training base is a national standard demonstration training base, and shipbuilding engineering technology training base is a vocational education training base supported by the central government. In addition, the college signed agreements with 41 companies such as COSCO Group, China Sea Group, Zhejiang Ocean Transportation Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Provincial Shipping Group Co., Ltd., established a relatively stable and mutually beneficial external internship teaching base, and implemented cooperation in school and enterprise education and training.
The college currently has 84 faculty and staff members, including 60 full-time teachers and more than 90 % of full-time teachers. Among them, 28 teachers have certificates of qualifications for senior crew members such as sea vessel captain and chief engineer, and are employed by the State Maritime Administration. In 2008, the navigation technology teaching team was rated as an excellent teaching team at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province. In 2009, the "Reform and Practice of Higher Vocational Seafarers Training Model Based on the Competence of International Seafarers" won the second prize for national teaching achievements.
The college has established a quality system for crew education and training in accordance with the requirements of the State Maritime Administration. It has the qualifications for 28 training programs such as pre-examination training for senior crewmen such as captains and chief engineers of all grades, professional training and special training for sea ships. The seagoing crew training project is complete in all categories and teaching management standards. It has now trained more than 150,000 employees for Zhejiang shipping enterprises and institutions. It is an important base for crew education and training in Zhejiang Province.
